Marina

The Marina is actually the area on the shore of Ashkelon where there the boats are docked. The Marina district run from the shores of the Mediterranean on the west to HaTayasim Street on the east. It consists of only eight to ten streets and has apartments that classified as residential as well as “Dirat Nofesh” (vacation apartments). Yefe Nof Street is the main drag of the Marina district and is close to the Marina, Marina mall and a few synagogues.

While visiting Yefe Nof  also visit the famous Roman Tomb, which was recently refurbished.

The Marina District of Ashkelon: Past and Present

The Marina District of Ashkelon, located along Israel’s southern Mediterranean coastline, stands as a unique intersection of ancient heritage and modern coastal living. Once part of the historical seaport of Ascalon—an important Philistine and later Roman city—the area now thrives as a hub of tourism, recreation, and upscale residential development.

Historical Roots

Thousands of years ago, the coast of Ashkelon was a key maritime gateway. Ascalon was one of the five Philistine cities mentioned in biblical texts, and it later flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule as a prosperous port and trade center. Crusaders and Islamic rulers also left their mark, building fortresses and religious sites near the shore. However, in the 13th century, the city’s fortifications were dismantled by the Mamluks to prevent Crusader reinvasions, and the ancient port fell into decline. By the Ottoman period, only scattered ruins remained near the coastline, while the inland village of Majdal developed nearby.

Modern Ashkelon was established in the early years of the State of Israel, incorporating the area of Majdal and expanding toward the coast. While remnants of ancient Ascalon are preserved in the nearby Ashkelon National Park, the modern Marina District began to emerge only in recent decades, as part of the city’s coastal revitalization.

The Marina Today

Today, Ashkelon’s Marina District is a thriving destination for residents and visitors alike. The Ashkelon Marina itself is a fully equipped harbor that accommodates hundreds of private boats and yachts, offering modern services such as water and electricity hookups, fuel stations, repair docks, and even boat-lifting cranes. It has become a key stop for international sailing and yachting along the eastern Mediterranean.

Surrounding the marina is a vibrant promenade lined with cafés, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and boutique shops. The nearby beaches—such as Delilah Beach and Bar Kochba Beach—are among the most attractive in southern Israel, drawing both families and solo travelers throughout the year. Parks, open spaces, and playgrounds make the area popular with local residents, especially on weekends and holidays.

The district has also seen a surge in high-end real estate development. Projects like the YAMA Marina complex offer sea-facing apartments with access to green spaces, leisure centers, and cultural amenities. These developments aim to turn Ashkelon into a regional hub for both Israeli homeowners and foreign investors seeking affordable coastal property.

A Bridge Between Past and Future

What makes the Marina District of Ashkelon especially unique is its position between ancient and modern worlds. A short walk from luxury apartments and lively cafes can take you to archaeological ruins, Crusader walls, and even ancient wells still visible in Ashkelon National Park. The marina area represents Israel’s ongoing effort to preserve its layered past while building toward a dynamic and livable future.

Whether you’re drawn by the history, the Mediterranean lifestyle, or the expanding urban infrastructure, the Marina District of Ashkelon stands as a compelling symbol of renewal—where ancient stones meet modern sails.
