A Guide to Ashkelon Neighborhoods

Navigating the world of home financing can be complex. Break down the jargon, understand your options, and embark on your buying journey with confidence.

In recent years, Ashkelon has grown tremendously as new neighborhoods are constructed. With the influx of new residents, English speakers are joining the existing English speaking community. Today there are upwards of 500 full and parttime English speaking residents.

AFRIDAR – THE JEWEL OF ASHKELON

Of all the neighborhoods in Ashkelon, Afridar stands out as a unique community and the most in demand. If you take a walk through the neighborhood, it will not take long to understand why there is such demand for Afridar.

Afridar (AFRI + DAR = AFRIca + AmiDAR) was founded as an Anglo community in 1951 by the Zionist Federation of South Africa. The community was built with a rural flavor, predominantly single-family homes with laneways connecting them and lots of green spaces. Because of its proximity to the beach (five minutes from HaTayasim), its rustic feeling and very few apartment towers, it is the most sought-after neighborhood in the city. The city has kept many of the original bylaws, ensuring that the neighborhood maintains that special feel for years to come.

Finding a residence in Afridar can be a challenge because it is so much in demand.

If you want to live close to the beach in Afridar, look on HaTayasim, Hashayetet and Modiin. Neighboring Afridar, and closer to the beach, look for new and taller buildings on Yefe Nof. There are about 25 to 30 apartment buildings in and close to Afridar that are no more than ten minutes to the beach. If you are willing to live a little bit farther away, check out the buildings in HaCity, which is to the south of Afridar.

Eshkolei Paz

Eshkolei Paz is the neighborhood to the south of Afridar,, closest to the sea. It is similar to Afridar, with single family homes and duplexes. The dividing line between Eshkolei Paz and HaCity, the next neighborhood to the south is Beit El St. There are numerous apartment buildings on the street, mostly low-rise buildings and very short walk to the sea.

Shimshon / Atikot

Founded in 1955, Shimshon was meant to enable immigrants who had been living in immigrant transit camps to find better residences. The homes were typical development style called “shikunim” and by 1958 immigrants from Islamic countries moved in. The neighborhood was densely populated and unemployment was high. Today it is undergoing changes. It is home to a number of street art murals.
