About Sarah Zecharia
Sarah Zecharia is the chairperson of the Municipal Pensioners’ (retirees’) Association in Ashkelon (“יו”ר ארגון הגמלאים העירוני באשקלון”) who has been deeply involved in organizing events, advocating on behalf of elderly residents, and forging partnerships with national institutions.
Under Sarah’s leadership, the association has developed strong traditions such as Israeli holiday parties, which “have become a tradition in the organization,” featuring performances by popular entertainers like Adir Miller and the Overton band . These events foster a sense of community and celebration among retirees, reinforcing social bonds and shared traditions. Sarah Zecharia oversaw a major two‑week trip to Central America—visiting cities like Mexico City, Guatemala City, and Tuxtla—on which members experienced memorable cultural, historical, and communal experiences. Zecharia joked that “the trip was like a post‑army journey,” highlighting how age is just a number for her group .
Beyond social gatherings and travel, Zecharia has also spearheaded collaborative initiatives with national institutions. She helped organize a joint conference between the local pensioners’ association and the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi), aimed at easing the transition to retirement for dozens of Ashkelon seniors. As she put it, “the conference has become a tradition helping pensioners make retirement smoother and more pleasant” . Additionally, Zecharia has engaged with the National Labor Federation (Histadrut), advocating for reforms such as stopping pension erosion, increasing old-age allowances, and implementing state-supported long‑term care insurance. At a meeting with the Histadrut chair, she emphasized the need to protect both budgetary and accumulative pensioners.
